SPARTANBURG, S.C.– Junior outside hitter Emily Keilen and senior setter Allison Penner, of the UNC Greensboro volleyball team, each recorded a double-double as the Spartans (9-11, 3-5 Southern Conference) fell to Wofford (10-11, 3-5 SoCon) 3-1 (13-25, 12-25, 25-20, 25-27) Saturday in Richardson Indoor to finish the first half of the SoCon schedule.
Keilen recorded 10 kills and 11 digs, while Penner led the team with 31 assists and added 13 digs for back-to-back double-doubles. The 31 assists for Penner gives her 4,012 career assists after eclipsing the 1,000-dig mark in Friday’s match.
Sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch led the team with 11 kills, while freshman outside hitter Anne Schölzel recorded a career-high nine kills.
Wofford scored four of the first five points in the first set to take a three-point lead, 4-1, but a UNCG point cut the lead to two points, 4-2. The Terriers scored 21 of the final 30 points to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Terriers scored 21 of the first 27 points in the second frame to take a 15-point lead, 21-6, but the Spartans outscored Wofford 6-4 during the rest of the set, but Wofford won the set and took a 2-0 match lead.
But the Spartans came out strong in the third stanza by scoring eight of the first 10 points to take a six-point lead, 8-2. Wofford scored the next four points to cut the lead to two points, 8-6, but UNCG scored six of the next nine points to increase its lead to five points, 14-9. The Terriers scored the next three points to cut the lead to two points, 14-12, but the Spartans outscored Wofford 11-8 during the rest of the set to win the set and to cut the match lead to 2-1.
Wofford scored seven of the first 11 points to take a three-point lead, 7-4, but the Spartans scored nine of the next 14 points to take a point lead, 13-12. The Terriers scored five of the next eight points to take a point lead, 17-16, but UNCG scored five of the next seven points to take a two-point lead, 21-19. Then Wofford scored five of the next seven points to take a point lead, 24-23, but the Spartans scored the next two points to take a point lead, 25-24. Unfortunately, the Terriers scored the final three points to win the set and the match.
The Terriers were led by Catie Cronister with 20 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double, Lorissa King with 23 assists and Taylor Gill with 27 digs.
The Spartans start the second half of the SoCon schedule with a three-match homestand starting with Mercer Friday at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
