GREENVILLE, S.C.– Senior setter Allison Penner recorded a double-double with a team-high 21 assists and 10 digs as the UNC Greensboro volleyball team (9-10, 3-4 Southern Conference) fell to Furman (8-11, 4-4 SoCon) 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 18-25) Friday night in Ally Gymnasium.
Penner entered the match needing eight digs to reach the 1,000-dig mark and she hit it in the second set. The Aurora, Neb., native also inched closer to her 4,000th career assist by recording 21 assists in the match. She now needs just 19 assists to achieve the milestone.
Junior Mikaela Weidmann led the team with nine kills and added a .269 hitting percentage along with three blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch added eight kills.
Furman scored nine of the first 10 points in the first set to take an eight-point lead, 9-1, but UNCG scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to four points, 10-6. The Paladins, however, would score the next eight points to increase their lead to 12 points, 18-6, before the Spartans fought back and scored six of the next eight points to cut the lead to eight points, 20-12. Furman, however, scored five of the final seven points to win the set and take a 1-0 match lead.
The Spartans scored six of the first 11 points in the second stanza to take a point lead, 6-5, but Furman went on a run, recording 18 of the next 25 points to take a 10-point lead, 23-13. UNCG then scored the next five points to cut the lead to five points, 23-18, but the Paladins scored two of the final three points to win the set and take a 2-0 match lead.
Furman scored seven of the first 10 points to take a four-point lead, 7-3, in the third and final frame, but the Spartans scored the next five points to take a brief point lead, 8-7. The Paladins then scored 17 of the final 28 points in the frame to win the set and the match.
The Paladins were led by Jordan McNeill with 12 kills and added 17 digs for a double-double, Hunter Thompson with 36 assists and 17 digs with a double-double and Meg DeMaar with 23 digs.
The Spartans finish the first half of the SoCon schedule with a trip to Wofford Saturday at 4 p.m.
