Kernersville, N.C. – UNCG cross country finished fourth for both the men and women in the HPU VertCross Invite Friday evening at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex.
Kaitlyn Stone was the top finisher for the Blue and Gold on the women’s side placing 10th followed by Taylor Delaney in 19th. Ariana Garcia was three spots behind, and Alycia Higgins (34th) and Holly Mordoff (43rd) rounded out the top-five for the Spartans.
“Kait had an encouraging performance heading into the Southern Conference Championships, and overall the top-three gave solid performances,” said head coach Chad Pearson. “Ariana had a nice bounce back race from the Louisville Sports Commission XC Classic. Moving towards the conference championships we will be looking to improve our spread from one to five.”
Luke Sumerford led the men in the field for a 16th place finish. Thomas Knepshield followed for 30th place, and Brandon Hernandez came in 35th. Dylan Christopher (40th) and Dalton Miles (45th) were the other two Spartans in their top-five.
“We were pleased with the way the men started and their ability to gain good position,” said Pearson. “We were also happy to see some of our freshmen step up and overall better pack running as a team. We’re excited to get back to work leading into the next two weeks.”
UNCG will be off next week and return to action Saturday, Oct. 27 at the SoCon Championships in Cullowhee, N.C.
