LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UNCG cross country resumed its season at the Louisville Sports Commission XC Classic at the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park Saturday morning.
“It was a step in the right direction for the men,” said head coach Chad Pearson. “We competed the way we needed to early in the race and just need to work on finishing a little better.”
Luke Sumerford led the Spartans in the 8K course with a time of 25:15.8, and Juan Rodriguez recorded the next top finish at 25:37.6. The freshman duo Brandon Hernandez (25:39.7) and Thomas Knepshield (25:50.8) and Trelek Jones (26:22.4) rounded out the top-five for UNCG.
“We saw Luke, Brandon and Trey step up where and when they need to,” said Pearson. “Overall we’re pleased with their effort and excited to get back to work over the next month.”
Taylor Delaney paced the Blue and Gold on the women’s side in a 5K. Delaney finished with a time of 18:11.5.
“As a penetrator up front, Taylor put herself out there after a month of not racing,” said Pearson. “We hope to continue to see her move up in races like we know she can.”
“It was a solid effort from our top two up front,” said Pearson. “Stone moved up throughout the race very well. It was good to see India Godlock back on the line, and we’re looking forward to seeing her progress after her first race of the season. Moving ahead we’d like to see our three, four and five runners closer to the front two for a better overall spread. We’re looking forward to getting back to work for the next month."
UNCG will be off next week and return to action Friday, Oct. 12 at the High Point VertCross Invitational.
