GREENSBORO, N.C.– UNC Greensboro’s volleyball team (8-8, 2-2 Southern Conference) bounced back with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-20) win against Chattanooga (6-10, 2-1 SoCon) Friday night in Fleming Gymnasium to begin a three-match homestand.
“That was the indicative of the flow of the match and the spirit that we had from the first serve throughout,” head coach Corey Carlin said of coming back from 17-14 in the final set. “We kept the pressure on Chattanooga. Being back at home was huge. We have a great home atmosphere and that definitely help.”
Sophomore Maria Esch led the team with a match-high 15 kills and recorded a .353 hitting percentage, while senior setter Allison Penner nearly recorded a double-double with a match-high 34 assists and nine digs. Junior outside hitter Emily Keilen added 10 kills.
The Spartans scored four of the first five points to take a three-point lead, 4-1, in the first set, but Chattanooga scored four of the next seven points to cut the lead to two points, 7-5. UNCG scored 18 of the final 23 points of the set to win the set by 13 points and to take a 1-0 match lead.
Chattanooga scored the first three points of the second frame, but the Spartans scored seven of the next 10 points to take a point lead, 7-6. The Mocs scored three of the next four points to take a point lead, 9-8, but UNCG scored nine of the next 11 points to take a six-point lead, 17-11, forcing a Chattanooga timeout.
After the timeout, the Mocs scored six of the next eight points to cut the lead to two points, 19-17, but the Spartans scored six of the final 10 points to win the set by three points and to take a 2-0 match lead.
Chattanooga scored eight of the first 13 points to take a three-point lead, 8-5, in the final stanza, but UNCG scored the next three points to tie the match at eight. UTC scored nine of the next 15 points to take a three-point lead, 17-14, but the Spartans scored nine of the final 12 points, including the final four points, to win the set by five points and to win the match.
The Mocs were led by Dani Szczepanski with nine kills, Jaquelyn Langhaim with 24 assists and Megan Kaufman with a match-high 16 digs.
The Spartans continue the homestand with Samford Saturday at 5 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
