GREENSBORO, N.C.- UNC Greensboro’s men’s soccer team snapped Campbell’s five-game winning streak on Tuesday evening, as the Spartans defeated the Camels by a final of 2-1 in overtime. With the victory, UNCG is now 4-5-0 on the season.

“A very important win for us and very proud of the guys after a poor performance against App State,” said Head Coach Justin Maullin. “We were completely on top of the game and even though it was tied up when they went a man down, we need to work on our composure and we should have done a better job of finishing off the game earlier. But very proud of the group. Now we have a week to prepare for the No. 1 team in the country.”

The Spartans continued their trend of strong defensive efforts in the first half of games this year, as UNCG did not allow a goal to Campbell in a scoreless opening frame.

It was the sixth match this year in which UNCG did not allow a goal in the opening half and the third straight contest keeping an opponent at bay during the first 45 minutes.

UNCG had two chances that nearly found the back of the net as Faisal Almubaslat tried to score in front of a crowded goal in the fourth minute before Leeroy Maguraushe had a shot saved in the 31st minute.

The second half started with momentum on the Spartans’ side, as UNCG got the first goal of the contest off an own goal. Things got more interesting later in the frame, as Campbell’s Thibaut Jacquel was given a red card to put UNCG up a man. However, the Camels would strike back late in the second half and tie the score at one off a penalty kick goal for Michael Barrow.

Despite the equalizer and the Spartans once again going to overtime, a freshman-to-freshman combo ended things as Brooks Rice crossed a perfectly placed ball to Jacob Planell to end the game.

The Spartans will return to action next Tuesday evening when they play Wake Forest at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons are currently ranked No. 1 in the country and entered Tuesday’s action with a perfect 8-0-0 record.

In the all-time series, UNCG trails Wake Forest 7-12-2 with the Spartans’ last victory over the Demon Deacons coming on Sept. 21, 2004.

The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
