MACON, Ga.– UNC Greensboro volleyball team (7-7, 1-1 Southern Conference) bounced back with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 13-25, 25-20, 16-14) win against Mercer University (8-5, 1-1 SoCon) Saturday.
Sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch led the team with 16 kills and recorded a .361 hitting percentage with four digs and six blocks, while senior setter Allison Penner led the team with 40 assists, seven digs and three kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Holly Behrends led the team with 16 digs and added eight kills and senior libero Christina Gregory added nine digs.
Mercer scored nine of the first 12 points in the first set to take a six-point lead, 9-3, but the Spartans scored 13 of the next 18 points to take a two-point lead, 16-14. The Bears scored 11 of the final 17 points to win the set by three points and to take a 1-0 match lead.
UNCG scored 13 of the first 21 points in the second frame to take a five-point lead, 13-8, but the Bears scored eight of the next 11 points to cut the lead to two points, 16-14. The Spartans outscored Mercer 9-6 during the rest of the set to win the set by five points and to tie the match at one.
The Bears scored 16 of the first 21 points in the third stanza to take an 11-point lead, 16-5, but UNCG scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to nine points, 17-8. MU outscored the Spartans 8-5 during the rest of the set to win the set by 12 points and to take a 2-1 match lead.
The Spartans scored 14 of the first 23 points to take a five-point lead, 14-9, in the fourth set, but Mercer scored four of the next five points to cut the lead to two points, 15-13. UNCG outscored the Bears 12-5 during the rest of the set to win the set by five points and to tie the match at two.
UNCG scored 11 of the first 18 points in the final frame to take a four-point lead, 11-7, but the Bears scored the next three points to cut the lead to a point, 11-10. After an Esch kill to increase the lead to two points, 12-10, Mercer scored the next two points to tie the set at 12. After a Spartan point to give UNCG a 13-12 lead, MU scored the next two points to take a 14-13 lead, but the Spartans scored the final three points to win the set by two points and to win the match.
The Bears were led by Roberta Todd with a match-high 20 kills and a match-high 16 digs for a double-double, while Maddie Nunley recorded a match-high 50 assists and added 11 digs for a double-double and Emilee Wissmach recorded a match-high 16 digs.
The Spartans finish the three game roadstand with a trip to Western Carolina University Wednesday at 6 p.m.
