CHARLESTON, S.C.– UNC Greensboro volleyball team (6-7, 0-1 Southern Conference) dropped the conference opener to The Citadel (6-6, 1-0 SoCon) 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 18-25, 22-25) Friday.
Senior setter Allison Penner recorded a double-double with a match-high 35 assists and 10 digs with three blocks and five kills, while sophomore Holly Behrends nearly recorded a double-double with a match-high 15 kills and added nine digs.
Senior libero Christina Gregory recorded a match-high 17 digs and added five assists, while sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch added 11 kills and two blocks.
The Citadel scored seven of the first nine points of the first set to take a five-point lead, 7-2, and extended its lead to 10 points, 20-10, after scoring 13 of the next 21 points. The Spartans scored seven of the final 12 points, but the Bulldogs won the set by eight points to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Spartans scored eight of the first 13 points in the second frame to take a three-point lead, 8-5, forcing a Bulldog timeout. After the timeout, The Citadel scored six of the next nine points to tie the set at 11, but UNCG outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 during the rest of the set to win the set by seven points and to tie the match at one.
The Bulldogs scored six of the first eight points to take a four-point lead, 6-2, in the third stanza, but UNCG scored seven of the next 10 points to tie the set at nine. With the Bulldogs holding a point lead, 13-12, The Citadel outscored the Spartans 12-6 during the rest of the set to win the set by seven points and to take a 2-1 match lead.
The Citadel scored four of the first six points in the final set for a two-point lead, 4-2, but the Spartans scored five of the next seven points to take a point lead, 7-6. The Bulldogs scored 11 of the next 16 points to take a five-point lead, 17-12, but UNCG scored eight of the next 10 points to take a point lead, 20-19. The Citadel scored six of the final eight points to win the set by three points and to win the match.
The Bulldogs were led by Mellanie King with 14 kills, Megan Fuhr with 32 assists and 13 digs for a double-double, while Sharlissa De Jesus also added 13 digs and 11 kills for a double-double.
The Spartans face Mercer University Saturday at 2 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
