GREENSBORO, N.C. – In it’s first tournament of fall play, UNC Greensboro’s women’s golf team shot a total team score of 311 in the first round of the Col. Wollenberg Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. The Spartans currently sit in 13th place. Live scoring for the Col. Wollenberg Ram Classic will continue to be available on GolfStat.com.
“Not the start to the season we were looking for,” said Head Coach Janell Howland. “We made some mistakes that were uncharacteristic of our team today. We had a good session after the round and are looking forward to getting after it tomorrow.”
The Spartans are the lone school from the East Coast participating in this week’s tournament, joining host Colorado State along with UC Irvine, New Mexico State, Wyoming, Long Beach State, Portland State, Boise State, Nevada, Nebraska, Northern Colorado, San Francisco and Idaho.
Senior Lexi Kershaw totaled a 73 to lead the Spartans on the first day, as she shot a one-under 35 on the front nine. Despite recording bogeys on holes No. 10 and 11 along with No. 13 and 14, the Winston-Salem, N.C, native collected birdies on 12 and 15. She also birdied No. 17.
As for sophomore Keri Kenkel, she also shot a one-under 35 on the front nine with birdies on holes No. 5 and 7 before finishing the opening round at 81.
Tara Bettle, the reigning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, birdied two of the first five holes on the day as the Berlin, Germany, native finished at 78.
Junior Louisa Tichy, meanwhile, finished her first tournament of the season with an 83.
Freshman Hailey Joy, the team’s lone newcomer this season, is among the participants for UNCG this week. On the first hole of her collegiate debut, Joy tallied a birdie. She finished the round at 79.
In individual play, senior Natalia Asensio shot a 78 (one-over 36 on the front nine) and is currently tied for 41st place.
