Hurricane Florence Changes Volleyball Schedule This Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C.– With Hurricane Florence expected to make landfall in North Carolina this weekend, the UNC Greensboro volleyball changed its schedule.
Instead of playing in the Tussel in the Triad tournament with High Point University, University of Kansas and Elon University, the Spartans travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face Kansas twice this weekend on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the final non-conference matches of the season.
Since dropping the first set against Winthrop University to start last weekend’s matches, the Spartans have won nine consecutive matches by winning the final three sets against Winthrop in a 3-1 win and swept Delaware State University and North Carolina A&T State University.
Sophomore outside hitter Holly Behrends leads the team with 3.12 kills per set, while junior outside hitter is averaging 2.90. Senior setter Allison Penner leads the team with 6.21 assists per set and sophomore setter Giana Rasmussen adds 4.32 assists per set.
Defensively, senior libero Christina Gregory leads the team with 4.64 digs per set, while junior middle hitter Lauren Robeck leads the team with 0.73 blocks per set and junior middle hitter Mikaela Weidmann adds 0.66 blocks per set.
The last time out, the Spartans defeated the Aggies 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-18) on Saturday to conclude the Spartan-Aggie Invitational. Weidmann recorded a match-high nine kills, while Penner recorded a match-high 18 assists and Gregory recorded a match-high 16 digs. Junior outside hitter Rebecca Rice and junior defensive specialist Grace Howell each recorded seven digs, while Anne Schölzel added five kills.
The Spartans start their Southern Conference schedule next weekend with The Citadel Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in Charleston, S.C., and Mercer University Saturday in Macon, Ga., at 6 p.m.
