GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s soccer (2-0-1) defeated the Richmond Spiders (0-3-0) Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Spartans scored two unanswered goals in a two-minute span in the second half to earn the victory.
After entering late in the first half and starting the second half in her first appearance of the season, Preseason All-Southern Conference selection Cienna Rideout made a big impact for the Spartans in her 2018 debut by scoring the game-winning goal in the 59th minute. Rideout knocked down a feed in the middle of the box off a cross from the right side of the field by Kaley Tucker and buried a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Tucker then added an insurance goal just two minutes later. She dribbled the ball close to the right side of the box and put a shot in the top right corner of the net just like Rideout for her second goal of the year.
UNCG struck first in the game when Quiqui Hita got her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Jordin Mosley passed the ball from the right corner into the box for Hita, who quickly put it in the net from just a few yards out.
Richmond tied the game up five minutes later. TJ Anderson collected a loose ball in the middle of the box off a corner kick and shot it into the left side of the net.
UNCG and Richmond finished with the same amount of corner kicks (four) and shots on goal (five), and the Spiders ended up with one more shot (15-14).
Goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (2-0-1) made four saves, including three in the first half on early Richmond scoring chances.
Rideout and Tucker both tied for a game-high three shots. The two combined to early pressure on the Richmond defense to start the second half, which eventually led to their goals.
UNCG will stay at home for its next match Sunday at 2 p.m. against UNCW.
