UNCGSpartans.com 07-23-2018

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG Athletics announced today that the Spartan Club set several new all-time records during the 2017-18 fiscal year.

“We are incredibly thankful to all of our supporters who continue to strengthen UNCG Athletics both on the playing fields and off,” said Director of Athletics Kim Record. “This past year was historic for the Spartans in many ways, and it would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors, student-athletes and Athletics staff and coaches. The support we received will continue to allow us to take even more Giant Steps.”

The new all-time records include the following:

  • $851,118 raised in overall cash and gifts in-kind; a 12 percent increase over 2016-17; breaks the record of $818,116 set in 1993.
  • $532,402 raised for the Athletic Scholarship Fund; sets a record for the seventh year in a row.
  • 1,121 donors to the Athletic Scholarship Fund; sets a record for the fifth year in a row.

In addition, 100 percent of all student-athletes and full-time Athletics staff and coaches made a gift to the program, with student-athletes reaching the mark for a fifth consecutive year. The number of athletic alumni donors also increased by 20 percent.

The Spartan Club also announced three historic gifts in 2017-18:

Endowed Scholarships for Men’s Golf

In May, UNCG Athletics received the largest donation in program history from Robert M. Saunders (’86, 88 MBA) and Nanette L. Saunders, a $1.5 million planned gift that will be used to create two endowed scholarships for Men’s Golf: the Robert M. Saunders Men’s Golf Endowed Scholarship and the Nanette L. Saunders Men’s Golf Endowed Scholarship.

A Revamped Locker Room for Women’s Basketball

Also in May, long-time Spartan Club member Jo Safrit, a 1957 Woman’s College graduate, made a $100,000 donation to the Women’s Basketball program that will be used for significant renovations to the team’s locker room. The updated facility will now be called the Jo Safrit Women’s Basketball Locker Room. This is the first-ever gift to name a major renovation or construction project for UNCG Athletics.

A Special Endowment for Baseball

In June, UNCG Athletics also received a $150,000 planned gift to establish the first named position endowment in program history. The gift is from the estate of Edwin C. Jennings, 3rd to create the Edwin C. Jennings, 3rd Baseball Scholarship Endowment. This endowment will support student-athletes who play the position of shortstop on the baseball team.
