GREENSBORO, N.C. – 140 UNCG student-athletes received Southern Conference Honor Roll honors for their performance in the classroom during the 2017-18 academic year. There were 2,210 total SoCon honor roll selections, setting a new record and it is just the third time that the SoCon has eclipsed the 2,000 plateau. Each of the SoCon’s 10 full members had at least 131 student-athletes on the list.
The academic honor roll originated in 1988-89, when the SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league’s outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists.
Baseball led all UNCG teams with 21 players earning honor roll accolades, followed by women’s soccer with 18, softball with 17, men’s soccer and volleyball with 11, women’s cross country added 10, men’s tennis and men’s basketball contributed eight honorees each, women’s golf added seven, men’s cross country, men’s golf and women’s basketball with six, men’s track and women’s tennis with five and women’s track adding two.
Additionally, 17 Spartans earned a 4.0 GPA this semester and 41 picked up the SoCon’s Commissioner Award by earning over a 3.8 GPA.
