AIKEN, S.C. – UNCG men’s golfer Bryce Hendrix won the Palmetto Amateur on Saturday with a 6-under-par 274 (66-73-62-73) on the par-70 6,713-yard Palmetto Golf Club. Nick Lyerly (69-71-71-70) and Jonathan Brightwell (71-69-74-67) both tied for 11th-place with scores of 1-over 281.
Hendrix entered the final round on Saturday with a two-stroke lead in first place at 9-under and topped Auburn’s Trace Crowe (70-67-72-66) and Dayton’s Tripp French (71-68-67-69) by one-stroke to win the tournament. Hendrix tied for the lowest-round score in the 84-player field with an 8-under 62 aided by 10 birdies in the third round on Friday. He also tied for the fifth-best round score in the first round with a 4-under 66 that featured five birdies on the back-nine.
Brightwell tied for the second-best score on the final day with a 3-under 67. He turned in a 1-under 33 in the front nine and birdied the first two holes to start the back-nine. Lyerly’s best round came on Thursday with a 1-under 69 with three birdies to start the tournament.
On Monday Hendrix claimed a first alternate spot for the 2018 US Open with a tie for third-place in the 36-hole Georgia Sectional Qualifier.
The Palmetto Amateur has been contested since 1976, first as the Aiken Golf Classic and then, beginning in 1998, as the Palmetto Amateur. The tournament is held at the historic Palmetto Golf Club, where golf was first played in Aiken, S.C, in 1892.
