SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartan offense couldn’t back a strong outing from its ace Friday night as the Spartans dropped a 2-1 matchup with the Wofford Terriers at Russell C. King Field. Wofford’s starting pitcher Adam Scott threw one of the best games of his Terrier career as he earned the complete game win, striking out 17 hitters in the process. UNCG drops to 29-11 on the season and 10-3 in Southern Conference play. Wofford moves into first place with a 29-14 overall record and are also 10-3 in league action.

Matt Frisbee started on the mound. The junior logged 8.1 innings allowing four hits, an earned run and struck out 11 before giving way to Jack Maynard. Maynard allowed two hits and a run as he suffered his third loss of the season.

The Spartan offense managed seven hits against Scott, four of which came off of 2-for-4 performances from Caleb Webster and Tripp Shelton. Redshirt senior Jake Kusz drove in the lone Spartan run of the game as he scored Shelton on a squeeze play in the second inning. Kusz, Andrew Moritz and Ryan Clinch all added hits in the contest.

“(Matt) Frisbee threw a great game and so did (Adam) Scott (Wofford).” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “Scott uses a three-pitch mix with a really lively fastball with deception. Tripp (Shelton) and Caleb (Webster) had some good at bats, (Jake) Kusz got the squeeze down and then a hit and run later gave us an opportunity, I was proud of the way we executed that.”

“Well played game, obviously very well pitched, tough, tough day to score.” Jarrett continued, “They were able to create at the end. As good as Jack (Maynard) has been, its unfortunate that the one hit blooped into the infield like that, you couldn’t drop the ball better than that, but it worked out for them and they deserved to win that game. My hat’s off to Adam Scott. That guy pitched a great game and so did Frisbee, but we came up on the short end of it.”

The Spartans drew first blood in the top of the second inning. Shelton led off with a double down the right field line before sacrifice bunts from Zach Kuchmaner and Kusz moved him over and eventually in to take the early 1-0 lead.

After six scoreless innings, the Terriers mounted a rally with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Frisbee gave up a walk before giving way to the bullpen. Mack Nathanson dropped a single over the UNCG pitcher’s head and in front of the shortstop to put two on. After another walk loaded the bases, Cody Miller doubled down the left field line to score two and give Wofford the 2-1 victory.

The Spartans will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Russell C. King Field
