NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Junior pitcher Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) struck out a career-high 13 hitters as he tossed his first complete game of the season, and third of his career in the first-ever meeting with the Lipscomb Bison Friday night. The Spartans defeated the Bison 9-3 and pulled away by scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning for the victory. UNCG improves to 13-4 on the season and have won six-straight games. Lipscomb falls to 8-10 on the season.

Frisbee tossed the full nine innings, registering 13 strikeouts, scattering four hits, allowing three earned runs and walking three. He threw 116 pitches, 79 for strikes in the win.

Freshman Greg Hardison (Greenville, N.C./JH Rose) had a banner night at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a game-high four RBI, two doubles and scored a run. The bottom of the order got the job done as Josh Madole (Hampstead, N.C./Topsail), Ryan Caveness (Greensboro, N.C./Guilford Tech) and Hardison combined for seven hits and seven of UNCG’s eight RBI.

Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) added an RBI single in the win. Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) finished 3-for-6 on the day, with Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.

“(Matt) Frisbee was excellent the entire ball game.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “He works and trains very hard and that showed today with the command and stuff he had for nine innings. (Greg) Hardison had an exceptional offensive day and propelled our offense.”

The Spartans got on the board first, plating a run in the top of the first. Madole led off with a double and moved to third on a Caveness sacrifice bunt. Hardison drove in his first run of the day, going the other way with the first pitch he saw to drive in Madole and put UNCG up 1-0.

Lipscomb didn’t let the lead last long as it tied it up with some small ball. Tevin Symonette singled and an error put two on. After a sacrifice bunt, Blake Thomas ground out to third base, but Symonette was able to score on the play.

UNCG got back in front in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs. Madole got the rally going as he drew a one-out walk before Hardison doubled to put two in scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Madole to score before Embler singled up the middle to bring in Hardison and take a 3-1 lead.

The Blue and Gold doubled up its lead in the sixth as Trejo and Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) led off with back-to-back singles. A double steal put two in scoring position for Caveness who doubled down the left field line to score two. Hardison followed with a hit of his own to bring in Caveness and put UNCG up 6-1.

The Bison added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and eighth innings to trim the lead to 6-3. UNCG used a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 7-3 in the ninth before Hardison again came up big, doubling to right field to go up 9-3.

UNCG and Lipscomb are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at 3 p.m.
