SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) and Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) swept the Southern Conference’s Player and Pitcher of the Week honors for their performances last week. The Spartans went 4-0 during the week, rallying in the ninth inning to defeat Elon before sweeping the Lafayette Leopards on the weekend. This is the first weekly honor for both Trejo and Maynard. Trejo was previously named the SoCon’s Player of the Month for his performance in February.
Trejo led a Spartan offense that scored 39 runs during the week. He had multiple hits in every game and driving in seven runs during the week. He went for extra bases three times, including his team-best third home run of the season. He drew two walks and stole three bases during the week, including two at Elon. Trejo had productive at bats all week as he struck out just one time in his 15 at bats. He scored four runs and drew a pair of walks throughout the week. In the series opener against Lafayette, Trejo finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, a double and a home run while drawing a walk. He added another 3-for-4 performance in the first game of the doubleheader against Lafayette. He drove in a run and scored twice in the victory. In the series finale, he added a 2-for-4 performance with a double and an RBI.
Maynard made two appearances last week, earning the win in both games. He worked a total of 7.0 innings, striking out 14 hitters. He allowed just four hits and one walk as he secured tough situations in both appearances. Maynard entered in a bases loaded situation in a 5-5 game in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday at Elon. Maynard struck out the first hitter he saw en route to tying a career-best with eight strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. He scattered three hits and walked a hitter in his win. UNCG rallied in the ninth to earn the win. Against Lafayette on Saturday, Maynard entered with two runners on in a 3-2 game Saturday. He struck out the first batter he faced before taking care of a ground out to preserve the Spartan lead. Maynard worked a total of 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six hitters in the victory.
Trejo, Maynard and the rest of the Spartans are back in action Tuesday as they’ll host the Elon Phoenix at 4 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
