ATHENS, Ga. – UNCG softball (13-5) dropped a pair of games in the Ninth Annual Bulldog Classic on Saturday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium, falling 1-0 to Radford (11-6) and 7-0 at the host school No. 14/14 Georgia (16-1).
In the first game of the day for UNCG, Radford scored the only run in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff double dropped in between two Spartans in left field, a sacrifice bunt and fly brought the runner home.
With just four hits in the game, UNCG twice was unable to take advantage of runners in scoring position after doubles in consecutive innings. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) hit a leadoff, standup double to right center that bounced off the wall in the fourth inning, but three-straight outs left her on second base. Becca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) doubled to left center with two outs the next inning, but a groundout three pitches later ended the scoring threat.
Hannah Stiltner (Mebane, N.C./ Eastern Alamance) pitched a complete game, allowing one run, five hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
In the following game Georgia scored two runs in its first trip at the plate. With one out, the Bulldogs got a single and a double to put both runners in scoring position, and a single up the middle knocked both in.
With two outs in the next inning Kale doubled in the right center gap. It was the first extra-base hit allowed by Georgia since Feb. 18. A groundout in the next at-bat though ended the scoring threat.
The Spartans were able to get another runner to second base in the third inning when Kayleigh Willis (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) singled to left field and advanced on a wild pitch. UNCG then recorded three-straight outs to leave her on base.
The Bulldogs added another run in the same inning. After loading the bases with a walk and two singles, another single through the right side produced the run.
In the fourth inning UNCG put two runners on base. Willis was hit by a pitch and went to second base on a single by Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) to left field with one out. The next two Spartans struck out to strand the two runners.
Georgia scored four runs in the sixth inning. After a double to right field and a walk, with two outs another double down the left field line knocked in the first run. Then a ball just got over the left field wall for a three-run homer.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) started in the circle and gave up 10 hits, four runs and three walks with one strikeout in 5.1 innings pitched. Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) recorded the last two outs and allowed three runs, two hits and a walk with a strikeout.
UNCG will close out the tournament and face Georgia again at 1 p.m.
