CONWAY, S.C. – UNCG softball (3-1) shut out Iowa State (2-3) 2-0 on Sunday morning at CCU Softball Stadium. Pitchers Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) and Hannah Stiltner (Mebane, N.C./ Eastern Alamance) combined for the shutout, allowing eight hits to the Cyclones.
UNCG produced both runs in the second inning. Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) led off with a double down the left field line, and Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./Stony Brook) and Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) walked to load up the bases. With two outs Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) knocked in both Acquaviva and Overdiep. The Spartans would not have a hit for the rest of the game.
Iowa State mustered all eight hits off the starter Bazonski. The Cyclones put runners in scoring position in five innings. In the sixth inning they had runners on second and third base for the first time in the game, but Bazonski got a groundout to third baseman Gabi Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) to end the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Iowa State led off with two singles through the right and left sides. Stiltner came in relief and produced three-straight outs, including two strikeouts for the last two, to earn her first collegiate save.
Bazonski (2-1) allowed eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts in her six innings pitched.
Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) had the only other hit for the Spartans, a single in the first inning. The Spartans also drew three walks and were hit by a pitch twice.
UNCG will head to Florida next weekend for the Eastern Michigan Madeira Beach Spring Invitational, facing Massachusetts and Ohio on Friday to begin the tournament.
