Gregory Ties a SoCon Record with Her Third Defensive Player of the Month Honor
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior libero Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) earned her third Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Month award as announced by the league office, Monday. She’s the only Spartan to win the award multiple times, having won twice during the 2016 season.
Her three SoCon Defensive Player of the Month awards is tied for the most all-time in SoCon history. She is currently tied with Tiffany Blum of College of Charleston (2004-05, 2007) and Nicole Palazzo of Furman (2006, 2008).
Gregory upped her game over the final month of the season, earning a 5.62 digs per set average. She went for 23 or more digs in six of seven matches during the final month. She added a 30-dig effort in a five-set victory over Western Carolina. She made just one service reception error in 66 attempts, good for a .985 service reception percentage. She earned a season-best three aces in the victory over The Citadel in the regular season finale.
Gregory helped UNCG earn a 19-12 overall record and finished 11-5 in SoCon play for the fourth-straight season. The Blue and Gold defeated Chattanooga before falling to eventual SoCon Tournament Champions, ETSU in the SoCon Tournament.
She led the Spartans to a 5-2 record over the final month of the season, including winning three-consecutive five-set matches. Spartan volleyball earned its first-ever Division I postseason appearance as it took on UCF in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship last week in Athens, Georgia.
