Women's Basketball Treks To Charlottesville for Matchup with ACC Foe Virginia

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s basketball hits the road for a matchup with Atlantic Coast Conference-foe Virginia Saturday afternoon at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Spartans enter the contest at 4-3, suffering a tough loss at Radford Tuesday. Virginia enters at 3-5 and have lost its last two games against Duquesne and Maryland.

UNCG is looking for its first win against Virginia and 19th against an ACC opponent. The Spartans are currently 18-62 all-time against ACC opponents, but are 0-3 against the Cavaliers.

Nadine Soliman (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School) leads the Spartan offense with 13.9 points per game. Brandi Fier (South Beloit, Ill./Illinois Central) adds 11.1 points per game and leads the team with 33 assists. She ranks 63rd in the country in total assists and fourth in the SoCon.

On the glass, Ije Ajemba (Lanham, Md./Old Dominion) is one of the most dominant players in the SoCon. She currently leads the league and ranks 15th nationally with 79 total rebounds. She also ranks 23rd in the nation with 11.3 rebounds per game and 30th nationally with 8.0 defensive rebounds per game. The Spartans have outrebounded opponents by 2.3 rebounds per game.

Virginia enters Saturday’s contest with a 3-5 record, dropping back-to-back games. Last time out, the Cavaliers suffered a tough 60-59 loss to the Maryland Terrapins in the Big 10/ACC Challenge in Charlottesville. All three of Virginia’s wins have come on their home floor. The Cavaliers have lost to Mississippi State, Georgia, Dayton, Duquesne and Maryland.

The Cavaliers were picked to finish fifth in the league’s coaches poll prior to the start of the season. Three Cavaliers average double figures, led by Dominique Toussaint. Toussaint has started all eight games and is shooting 37-percent from the field. She also leads the team with 27 assists. Jocelyn Williams adds 11.5 points per game and hauls down 5.3 boards per game. Aliya Huland El made four starts and has appeared in all eight games. She averages 10 points per game and leads the team, shooting 45-percent from 3-point range. Felicia Aiyeotan leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game and Lauren Moses brings down 5.8 rebounds per contest.
