GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball welcomes in its final home opponent of the 2017 regular season Wednesday evening as the Western Carolina Catamounts come to Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans enter the matchup on a five-match winning streak and have won seven of their last eight matches. The Blue and Gold is currently third in the Southern Conference standings with a 9-5 league mark. Western Carolina has split its last six matches and is coming off of a 3-1 loss to Furman and are currently 5-9 in SoCon play.

There will be live stats and a video stream for tomorrow’s match. Links for these services are located on the UNCG volleyball schedule page. The video stream is available via the SoCon Digital Network, with UNCG’s own Jermaine Williams on the call.

UNCG holds a slight advantage in the all-time series with Western Carolina, taking the edge in the series earlier this season. The Spartans swept the Catamounts in Cullowhee to go ahead 24-23 all-time. In Greensboro last season, the Spartans notched a win, 3-1. The last time WCU won in Greensboro was during the 2014 season in a five-set match.

UNCG enters tonight's match having won five-straight matches, and seven of its last eight. During that stretch, UNCG has swept three teams and notched a 3-1 victory over the current SoCon leaders, Furman, before defeating Wofford in five sets last weekend. For their efforts last weekend, UNCG swept the Southern Conference's weekly awards. Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) claimed her first Offensive Player of the Week, with Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) taking home her sixth-career Defensive Player of the Week award.

The senior class has a chance to win the most Southern Conference matches by any class in program history. The Spartan seniors can earn their 43rd SoCon victory against Western Carolina, tying the current record, set by last season’s senior class. With a win tonight and a win Saturday at The Citadel, the seniors will have won the most SoCon matches by a class in UNCG history.

The Catamounts enter having split their last six matches. Last weekend, WCU scored a four-set win over Wofford, holding the Terriers to a .128 average and hitting at a .253 clip, with three players scoring double digit kills. The following night, WCU fell 3-1 to Furman as the Catamount offense struggled. Katie O’Connor handled the Paladin defense, scoring 21 kills, but no other Catamount scored in double digits.

Gabby Gray and O’Connor lead the team with 2.60 and 2.50 kills per set, respectively. Jo-Leigh VerVelde has scored 9.05 assists per set, serving as the primary setter. Meagan Sanchez leads the team with 4.07 digs per set, with VerVelde adding 2.95.
