GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s and men’s cross country program head down to Spartanburg, S.C., Saturday for the 2017 Southern Conference Championships hosted by Wofford at the Milliken Research Center. The women will race on the 5,000-meter course at 10 a.m. while the men will compete on the 8,000-meter course with a 10:45 a.m. start time.
The women’s team finished fifth in the SoCon Championships last season with Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) leading the way. Delaney posted an 11th place finish in the race to pace the Spartans, posting a time of 17:42.05. She earned SoCon All-Freshman honors for her efforts during the cross country season.
Delaney owns the Spartans’ top time in the 5,000-meter race this season as well, turning in a time of 18:14.90 at the Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame. Sophomore Kaitlyn Stone (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Stokes) has the Spartans’ second-fastest time at the distance, posting a 18:50.00 at Notre Dame while freshman India Godlock (Polk County, N.C./Polk County) rounds out the top three times at 18:56.00.
The men’s team posted an eighth place finish at the SoCon Championships last season. William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) is the Spartans top returning finisher from last year’s team as he placed 49th overall with a time of 25:56.40.
This season, Sandin has the Spartans’ top time in the 8,000-meter distance, posting a time of 25:26.87 at the Pirate XC Invitational. Freshman Juan Rodriguez and sophomore Trelek Jones (Lynchburg, Va./Wake Forest) round out the Spartans’ top three times at 26:19.84 and 26:54.62, respectively.
