GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s tennis competed in a pair of doubles matches and a singles flight Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts. It was the second day of the two-day event.
The day got started with doubles action. Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/St. Peter’s) and Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) as well as Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) and Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) paired to take on teams from East Carolina.
Palmer and Burkill dropped an 8-6 match with Kasey Countee and Freddie McGeehan, 8-6. Walker and Grewe dropped their match to Ronny Georgi and Vlad Anghel, 8-4.
Logan Blaser (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall) and Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) teamed up to take on a split pair consisting of Elon’s Jacob Bicknell and Furman’s Josh Pistorious. The Spartan pair dropped the matchup, 8-7 (3).
Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) and Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) paired and defeated Elon’s Neal Port and Felipe Osses-Konig, 8-7 (5). Hammarstedt and Walker dueled with Kyle Frankel and Camilo Ponce of Elon, defeating the Phoenix, 8-7 (11). Eric Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) and Grewe paired up to take on Alex Steryous of Furman and Bicknell of Elon. The Spartans fell in a tiebreaker, dropping the match 8-7 (0).
In singles action, the Spartans took on the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. Palmer, Burkill and Grewe all scored victories. Palmer defeated Olly Cull, 6-1, 6-2. Burkill defeated Ed Colcolough, 6-2, 6-4 and Grewe took care of Finlay McFadyen, 6-3, 6-1.
Hammarstedt and Blaser also competed in singles, dropping their matches in three sets. Hammarstedt fell to Andrew Sanai, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1), 1-0 (2), and Blaser fell to Reese Daly, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3).
The men’s tennis team returns to the court next weekend as it heads to Charlotte, North Carolina for the 49ers Fall Invite.
