GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s soccer notched a narrow 1-0 victory over the VMI Keydets Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Despite the low score, UNCG played tough on its attacking third of the pitch. The Spartans put together quality chances, earning 15 shots with nine on frame in the contest. UNCG improves to 6-7-3 overall and is now 3-2-2 in Southern Conference play. VMI falls to 5-10-1 and 2-4-1 in the SoCon.
Regan Lehman (Wilmington Del./Padua Academy) led the Spartan attack with three shots in the contest, two on frame and had the match’s only goal. Quiqui Hita (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) came in off the bench to add three shots. Cienna Rideout (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) tallied two quality shots, both on frame and earned an assist.
Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Spartans, earning one save on seven Keydet shot attempts.
UNCG had quality chances in the first half, recording seven shots, five of which were on frame. Lehman led the offense with a pair of shots in the half, including an opportunity inside the six yard box off of a corner kick, but the VMI keeper was equal to the chance and picked up the save.
The Spartans scored the match’s only goal in the 70th minute. Rideout possessed the ball with the Keydet defender on her back inside the 18-yard box. Rideout played the ball back out to Lehman who fired a shot from about 25 yards out and beat the VMI goalkeeper for the only goal.
The women’s soccer team is back in action Friday night as it hosts the Mercer Bears at 7 p.m. on the first night of Homecoming.
