GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior men’s golfer Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) posted the sixth-lowest round in program-history Saturday afternoon and sits in third place overall in the individual standings to lead the Spartans in day one of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina at the Finley Golf Course. The third and final round will begin Sunday morning on the par-72, 7.349-yard course with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. UNCG will tee off from holes No. 8-11 and live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.

Hendrix sits in a tie for third place overall at 9-under par 135 after two rounds and five strokes out of the lead currently held by the No. 70 ranked golfer, Ben Griffin of UNC (14-under par). Hendrix opened the day with a 2-under par 70 in round one before posting the sixth-lowest round in UNCG golf history with a 7-under par 65 in round two. In his first round, he was 2-over par through 14 holes but went 4-under par over his final four holes to post the 70. He started his late charge with an eagle-3 on the par-5 No. 6 before posting birdies on No. 7 and No. 9 to close out the round.

Hendrix carried that momentum into the second round with a near flawless performance. He posted 11 pars and seven birdies on the round, including closing his back nine with four birdies in his final eight holes of the day. His 65 is tied for the second-lowest round of the day at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and he was ninth in the field with 10 birdies on the day. He ranked second in the entire field in par-4 scoring, going 6-under par on the 36-holes. His 65 score is a career-low, surpassing his previous low of 66 set as a freshman at the Linger Longer Invitational .

The Spartans as a team are tied for eighth overall with Maryland at 8-under par 568 after posting back-to-back rounds of 4-under par 284. The 284 score is the lowest of the season for the Spartans as a team this year. No. 32 North Carolina holds the overall lead at 31-under par 545 (275-270) while No. 41 Jacksonville is second at 25-under par 551 (275-276).

Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) made his first appearance in the starting lineup this weekend and has made the most of his showing. Cansler finished the first two rounds tied for 13th overall at 5-under par 139. He opened the day with a 2-under par 70 in round one with 14 pars, three birdies and one bogey. He followed that up with a 3-under par 69 in round two with 15 pars and birdies on holes No. 2,3 and 7 on his back nine. He leads the entire field with 29 pars in the first 36 holes.

Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) sits in a tie for 51st overall at 3-over par 147. Brightwell opened with an even-par 72 in round one with 11 pars and four birdies. He was 2-under par through 15 holes but a double bogey late brought him back to even-par. He followed that up with a 3-over par 75 in round two with four birdies and eight pars.

Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) finished the first two rounds in a tie for 57th place with a 5-over par 149. Lyerly opened with an even-par 72 in round one with three birdies, three bogeys and 12 par scores. He followed that up with a 5-over par 77 in round two.

Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) is also tied for 57th place at 5-over par 149. Stockwell posted rounds of 74-75, including three birdies in round one and in round two he carded 15 pars and three bogeys.

The Spartans also played four individuals at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate this weekend. Sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and freshman Regan Erhardt (Kernersville, N.C./Bishop McGuiness) led the individuals in a tie for 60th place overall at 6-over par 150. Both players posted rounds of 74-76 Saturday. Freshman Justin Emmons (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove) added a 65th place showing with an 8-over par 152 with rounds of 71-81. Emmons’ first round included 15 pars, two birdies and one bogey. Sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) rounded out the team in 73rd place at 11-over par 155 (75-80).

The field at the 2017 Tar Heel Intercollegiate includes the Spartans, North Carolina, Maryland, Gardner-Webb, UNCW, Campbell, Boston College, VCU, Virginia Tech, Coastal Carolina, Jacksonville and Furman.
