GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team closed out the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate Tuesday in 10th place overall at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course hosted by N.C. State. The Spartans return to action this weekend at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina at the Finley Golf Course.
The Spartans finished with an 891 scored after posting rounds of 295-289-307 in the 14-team field. Hosted N.C. State won the team title with an 848 (280-280-288) while North Carolina was second with a 850 score (280-280-290). Stephen Franken of N.C. State won the individual title by eight strokes with a 15-under par 201 (66-65-70).
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the team individually with a 3-over par 219 score to finish in a tie for 28th place overall. Brightwell opened with a 1-over par 73 in round one and a 2-under par 70 in round two. He finished out the week with a 4-over par 76 in round two with 11 pars and two birdies.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) finished tied for 36th overall with a 6-over par 222 score. Lyerly was at even-par after two rounds as he posted rounds of 73-71 Monday before carding a 6-over par 78 in the third and final round. He finished 12th in the field overall with 36 par scores in 54 holes and carded three birdies in his final round.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) turned in the Spartans’ low round Tuesday with a 1-over par 73. Hendrix moved up to 40th place overall with a 7-over oar 223 score after notching rounds of 78-72 Monday. His final round Tuesday included 15 pars, two bogeys and one birdie.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) finished the week in 60th place overall with a 15-over par 231. Stockwell opened the week with rounds of 75-76 on day one before carding an 8-over par 80 in the final round.
Sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) played in the lineup for the first time in his career and finished in a tie for 68th overall with a 20-over par 236. Buben opened with his best round of the year at 2-over par 74 before following up with rounds of 80-82. Sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) played as an individual and finished with his best round of the week with a 5-over par 77 Tuesday. He placed 76th overall with a 244 score (83-84-77), posting six birdies in the final round.
The field at the 2017 Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate includes the Spartans, NC State (host), Campbell, East Carolina, Francis Marion, George Washington, High Point, James Madison, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, North Carolina, USC Upstate, Chattanooga and Wofford.
