Women's Tennis Finishes up the Elon Fall Invitational
ELON, N.C. – UNCG women’s tennis wrapped up play in its first event of the 2017-18 season Sunday at the Elon Fall Invitational. The Spartans went a combined 4-7, including an all-Spartan finale in the Phoenix Singles bracket.
Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) notched a victory over Somer Dall-Bona of Coastal Carolina. Nancy Bridges (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) fell in a tough three-set match to Elon’s Maria Paraja in the Maroon bracket (4-6, 7-6 (6), 10-6).
In the Gold bracket, Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute) notched a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Appalachian State’s Heidi Swope. Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Sarah Horn of UNCW.
The Powell bracket saw Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) drop a 6-3, 6-2 matchup with Emory’s Emma Perelman.
The Phoenix bracket featured newcomers Brianna Gomez (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) and Tayah Cross (Queensland, Australia/Matthew Flinders Anglican College) facing off in the final match. Gomez earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over her fellow Spartan.
In Maroon doubles, Bridges and Boaz dropped the championship matchup to UNCW’s Madara Straume and Thai Thompson, 8-3.
Taylor and Emily Ory (Lafayette, La./Louisiana Connections Academy) continued to play well together, earning an 8-2 victory over ETSU’s Jayde Viccars and Melissa Esguerra in the Gold Bracket.
Adams and Blythe teamed to take on Coastal Caroiina’s Jesse Mount and Natalie Wall. The Spartans dropped the matchup, 8-2.
Phoenix doubles saw Cross and Gomez team up to take on Appalachian State’s Taylor Bygranve and Becca Morse with UNCG falling, 8-4.
