Men's Soccer Hosts UNC Asheville Saturday Night At 7 P.M.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team continues its three-game home stretch Saturday night when the Spartans host their third in-state foe of the year welcoming in UNC Asheville. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium and Admission is FREE! The game will be broadcast on the SoCon Digital Network with links available at www.uncgspartans.com. After the game, the team will be signing autographs on the field for fans.
Saturday’s game marks the 16th meeting all-time between UNCG and UNC Asheville. The Spartans hold a commanding 13-1-1 record all-time against the Bulldogs, but suffered their first-ever loss in the series last year in Asheville by a 2-1 scored. Former Spartan Damieon Thomas scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute only to see the Bulldogs score goals in the 69th and 80th minutes to claim victory. UNCG out-shot UNC Asheville by a 17-5 margin and had a 10-5 edge in corner kicks, but could not find the game-tying goal.
The Spartans enter the game with an 0-4-1 record as they have dropped three one-goal contests at home this year. UNCG has scored just two goals in five games after leading the Southern Conference in scoring the past three seasons. The Spartans have held opponents to seven goals so far this season.
Freshmen Sandro Bradara (Stuttgart, Germany) and Alex Henderson (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) each have found the back of the net this year against High Point and North Carolina, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) has played every minute in goal and owns a 1.34 goals against average.
The Spartans have three non-conference games left prior to SoCon play with the game against UNC Asheville, at Campbell and home against Appalachian State. UNCG opens SoCon play Sept. 26 at ETSU and was picked to finish third in the league in the preseason poll by SoCon coaches.
UNC Asheville enters Saturday’s game with an 0-5-0 record on the year and is being out-scored by opponents by a 14-3 margin this season. The Bulldogs have dropped games to Marshall (0-3), Loyola Marymount (0-2), UC-Irvine (1-2), Davidson (2-3 OT) and Furman (0-4). Richie Lee, Kyle Adam and Jackson Allen have scored one goal each this season. Tyler Moore owns a 2.81 goals against average in 352:07 in goal while Dakotah Bainte has played 99:00 minutes in goal with a 2.73 goals against average.
