Women's Basketball Volunteers at the Heads Up For Our Youth Back to School Rally
GREENSBORO, N.C. – While the focus in college athletics is typically on success both on the court and in the classroom, one of the unique opportunities afforded to teams is the ability to have a positive affect in their community. UNCG women’s basketball took full advantage of that opportunity, donating their time to the Heads Up For Our Youth Back to School Rally at the Greensboro Coliseum.
“With all of the great things that the Greensboro community does for our program it’s really important and rewarding for us to be able to give back,” said head coach Trina Patterson. “The Heads Up for Our Youth Back to School Rally is a wonderful event that pairs basketball with education and life skills to help set up the young children in our community to have a positive future. Our team had a great time working with the kids and we hope to be back for years to come.”
The rally is a community partnership event designed to teach, motivate, and inspire young people as they prepare to go back to school and achieve academic success. The Spartans teamed up with TGK Athletics to provide the young athletes with an opportunity to train and workout in a professional two-hour basketball skills and drills clinic. The Spartan players were assigned to different stations demonstrating skills and motivating the children in the areas of footwork, ball handling, layups, shooting, passing and rebounding.
In addition to the basketball skills clinic, the rally featured a motivational seminar, a tabletop demonstration of the solar eclipse, a dance contest, cheerleaders and, of course, UNCG’s very own Spiro. The rally culminated with its signature event, the “Cops vs. Barbers” Charity Basketball Game featuring Heads Up Barber and Beauty and The Greensboro Police Department.
