Baseball Makes First-Ever Trip to Columbus to Take on Ohio State
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball heads to Columbus, Ohio for the first time in school history this weekend. The Spartans and Buckeyes will be playing a three game series beginning Friday night at 6:35. Saturday’s contest will start at 3:05 p.m. and the series will wrap up Sunday at 1:05 p.m. UNCG enters at 22-14 on the season. Ohio State enters the weekend 15-22. Both teams dropped their last matchups.

A Little History -- Ohio State
The Spartans and Buckeyes have met just once in the 27-year history of UNCG Baseball. That meeting came back 2006 in a neutral site matchup at Hamon Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. The Spartans dropped that matchup 12-2. UNCG finished the 2006 season 26-33, and 17-11 in the Southern Conference. Ohio State went on to finished the 2006 season 37-21 and 19-12 in the Big Ten Conference. This will be the first trip to a Big Ten school in UNCG’s history.
Scouting the Spartans
UNCG enters after dropping four of its last five contests. The Spartans dropped two to Wofford last weekend, before earning a 13-12 victory in the finale Sunday. Tuesday night proved to be a tough night for the hitters as UNCG managed five hits and was shutout for the second time this season in a 1-0 loss at High Point. The last time UNCG was shutout, the Spartans responded by winning five-straight games.
The Spartan offense is led by freshman standout Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman). Webster has hit for a .436 average in 30 games this season, and ranks third in the country in average. Since being inserted into the starting lineup, UNCG has gone 20-8. Webster has made just one error and has recorded a .987 fielding percentage. The rookie sensation has recorded hits in 23 of the last 26 games, with seven multiple RBI games. Statistically, Webster the toughest player in the country to strike out. Having struck out just three times this season, his 36.7 at bats between strikeouts is the best ratio in the country. Andrew Moritz has started 35 games this year and leads the team with six triples. That total is tied for the most in the country. The team has hit 29 triples this year, leading the country. Moritz has scored a team-best 39 runs and swiped 11 bases. Senior Ben Spitznagel has hit at a .351 average in 30 games. Spitznagel has hit four doubles and three triples while scoring 28 runs. Cesar Trejo leads the team with seven home runs this season, and has driven in a team-best 38 runs.
Bryce Hensley - Making his 10th start of the season, third on Friday night. He racked up a season-high 13 strikeouts in a 6-1 victory over Princeton. Hensley has earned four quality starts and has struck out at least two hitters in every appearance.
Matt Frisbee - Frisbee has started every game in his UNCG career, making nine this season. The sophomore has logged a team-high 52.1 innings and has struck out 37 hitters. Frisbee earned the SoCon’s Player of the Week award earlier this season after shutting out South Carolina through 7.0 innings. Frisbee earned a quality start his last time out, going 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs in an 8-7 loss to Wofford
Dan Loats - Loats has worked himself into the weekend rotation and will be starting his third Sunday contest of the season. Earlier this season, Loats worked as the midweek starters and made relief appearances in two games. In his last outing, Loats struck out a career-high nine hitters as he helped UNCG earn a 13-12 win. Loats has allowed six or less hits in eight of nine games this season, with multiple strikeouts in every game.
Andrew Wantz - Wantz has made a team-high 17 appearances on the season. The junior has earned a 5-2 record with four saves in 44.1 innings of work. Wantz has allowed just 34 hits as he is tied with Jack Maynard for the team lead with 47 strikeouts.
Alex Sova - Sova has appeared in 11 games, earning a 2.81 ERA in 16.0 innings. Sova has struck out 18 hitters and has given up five earned runs on the year. Opponents are hitting .196 against him.
Jack Maynard - Maynard has been a new addition to the bullpen. After serving as the Friday night starter for the first seven weeks. Maynard has made five bullpen appearances, allowing just two earned runs in that time. In his last outing against High Point, the junior struck out five of the seven batters he faced as he shutout the Panthers through 2.1 innings.
Scouting the Buckeyes
Ohio State enters this weekend’s series with a 15-22 overall record and are 4-8 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes have lost five of its last six games, but defeated Michigan State in East Lansing, 13-8 in the final game of a three game series. Ohio State dropped its midweek contest to Northern Kentucky, 8-1 at Bill Davis Stadium
Ohio State’s offense hits at a .241 team average. Dominic Canzone hits at a team-best .341 average in 30 games this season. He has scored 13 times and driven in 16 along with three doubles, two triples and two home runs. Jalen Washington leads the Buckeyes with 17 extra-base hits. Washington has hit five home runs and driven in 24 runs, both of which lead the team. Tre’ Gantt has started all 37 games, hitting at a .293 clip. Gantt has hit two home runs and nine doubles and leads the team with 27 runs scored.
Yianni Pavlopoulos - Pavlopoulos has started five games and appeared in 14 total this season. The redshirt junior has earned a pair of saves in 33.0 innings of work this season. He has struck out 21 hitters and opponents are hitting .250 against him.
Connor Curlis - Curlis will be making his fifth start of the season this weekend. Curlis has made nine appearances out of the bullpen, and has earned a 4.50 ERA this season. He has struck out 37 hitters and has a 2-1 record.
Reece Calvert - Calvert has started a pair of games already this season, with 10 appearances from the bullpen. Calvert has earned an 8.19 ERA and a 2-0 record in his 29.2 innings of work. Calvert has struck out 19 hitters while allowing 27 earned runs.
Seth Kinker - Kinker has served as the Buckeye closer this season. Kinker has worked in 16 games, earning a 2.76 ERA. He has gone 1-0 with four saves while throwing in 29.1 innings. He has allowed nine earned runs while striking out 31 hitters on the year.
