Women’s Tennis Set for Southern Conference Tournament Friday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s tennis hits the road for the Southern Conference Tournament tomorrow afternoon.  The Spartans earned the six-seed in the tournament after finishing the 2017 regular season 3-18, and 2-5 in the Southern Conference.  UNCG faces off with the three-seed Mercer Bears at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center, hosted by Wofford College.  Mercer enters at 13-8 and 4-3 in the SoCon.

Earlier this season, UNCG hosted the Bears at the UNCG Tennis Courts.  UNCG fell to the Bears 5-2, taking the doubles point and getting a win from Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) at No. 6 singles.  

The Spartans are led by Southern Conference All-Freshman honoree Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute).  Adams has gone 8-7 this season and was 5-2 in SoCon play.  Adams finished the regular season playing at No. 4 singles where she has earned a 5-3 record.  Adams enters the tournament having won her last two matches.

Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) took over at No. 1 singles midway through the season.  DeMoss has earned a 2-7 record at No. 1, but has gone 3-4 in SoCon action.  Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) split time at No. 1 and No. 2 singles this season, earning a 7-13 record.   Taylor has gone 2-5 in SoCon play, earning wins in matches against Western Carolina and Wofford. 

No. 3 singles is held down by Nancy Bridges (Shelby, N.C./Shelby).  Bridges has gone 7-12 this season and 2-5 in SoCon play.  Bridges earned SoCon victories against Western Carolina and Samford.  Adams works at No. 4 and is backed up by Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) at No. 5.  Boaz has earned a 4-11 record and has also noted a pair of SoCon wins.  Blythe finished out the season playing at No. 6 singles where she has earned a win in the dual match with Mercer.

Taylor and DeMoss have teamed up to play at No. 1 doubles.  The pair has gone 1-11, earning a 6-3 victory over the No. 1 team from Charlotte.  Boaz and Bridges have notched seven wins, playing at No. 2 doubles.  Boaz and Bridges went 4-3 in SoCon play, notching victories over ETSU, Wofford, Chattanooga and Mercer.  Adams and Blythe have teamed to earn a 6-5 record at No. 3 doubles.  The pair enters having won five SoCon matches and have won its last two. 

UNCG women’s tennis takes on the Mercer Bears Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center, hosted by Wofford College in the first round of the SoCon Tournament.
