Men’s Golf Fires Second-Lowest Round Of Year, Sits In Second At Linger Longer
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team recorded its second-lowest round of the season and lowest round of the spring as the Spartans posted an 8-under par 280 score to sit in a tie for second place at the challenging Linger Longer Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State at Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga. The Spartans will be back in action for round two Monday with tee times on hole No. 1 from 10:10-10:50 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans are sitting 8-under par 280 and tied with No. 67 Troy for second place. UNCG trails on No. 4 Baylor in the field that includes 11 top-50 teams and three top-25 programs. Baylor holds the overall lead at 14-under par 274 after the first 18 holes. UNCG sat 15-under par through 15 holes Sunday but dropped a couple of strokes on the final three holes.
Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) tied his career-best round of 5-under par 67 and sits in a tie for fourth place overall, just one shot out of the lead. Hendrix posted four birdies, one bogey, 12 pars and an eagle-2 on the par-4 hole No. 7. His 67 ties his career-low set earlier this year in the second round of the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. He trails only two players tied for first at 6-under par 66 in Luke Moser of Troy and Chris Guglielmo of Kennesaw State. Hendrix was tied for the lead before posting a bogey on his second-to-last hole.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) sits in 17th place overall after recording a 2-under par 70. The 70 score is the second-lowest round of his career, posting a 3-under par 69 at the VCU Shootout in the season opener. Cansler held the overall lead after 12 holes Sunday. He finished the round with six birdies, including four straight from holes No. 18-3. He ended his day with four straight bogeys on holes No. 6-9 to finish in 17th place.
Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) tied his career-low with a 1-under par 71, marking the third time he has been under par this season. Brightwell also posted 71 scores at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and the Auto Trader Invitational. He posted birdies on holes No. 1, 3, 11 and 18 while posted three bogeys and 11 par scores to sit in 21st place.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) ended the day with an even-par 72 to sit in 30th place overall. He posted five birdies, including three straight on holes No. 1-3 but closed the day with a triple-bogey on No. 7 and a bogey on No. 8 to fall back to even. Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) rounded out the Spartans’ lineup with a 4-over par 76. He posted two birdies and an eagle-3 on the par-5 hole No. 18 to highlight his round.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes host No. 43 Kennesaw State, No. 56 Alabama, No. 51 Augusta, No. 4 Baylor, No. 77 Charlotte, No. 20 Georgia, Maryland, Mercer, No 37 Michigan, No. 45 Middle Tennessee State, No. 55 Ohio State, No. 67 Troy, No. 8 Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth.
