GREENSBORO, N.C. – When UNCG women’s basketball laces them up this Thursday against Southern Conference leaders Chattanooga at Fleming Gymnasium, it will be doing so with a much bigger cause than moving up the conference standings in mind. The game has been designated as the Spartans’ Play4Kay game, with proceeds being donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Yow is more than just a women’s basketball pioneer and Naismith Hall of Famer to the Blue and Gold, she’s one of their own. She is a 1970 graduate of UNCG where she earned a Masters Degree in Physical Education. Shortly after her graduation Yow embarked on her coaching career, leading Team USA to the 1988 Olympic Gold Medal and NC State to the 1998 Women’s Final Four.
The women’s basketball team has set up a donation page and encourages fans to donate to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund at this link. Donations have already started to roll in but more is always encouraged. UNCG currently ranks 10th in funds raised during the 2016-17 season, having raised over $750.
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a Play4Kay t-shirt at the door. All fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of research for women’s cancers. Official Kay Yow Cancer Fund merchandise will be available for purchase near the ticket window at Fleming Gymnasium.
At halftime of Thursday’s contest, in-game sponsor Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group Sales Manager Kevin Cooke will be presenting a donation check on the company’s behalf to Robin Pate, Director of Community Development for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Thursday’s 7:00 p.m. matchup with Chattanooga will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network. All live coverage options will be available at UNCGSpartans.com.
