Spartan Club Launches Giant Steps for 50 Years Effort
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Spartan Club, the official fundraising organization for UNCG Athletics, has launched Giant Steps for 50 Years, an ambitious fundraising effort inspired by this year’s celebration of 50 years of organized intercollegiate athletics at UNCG.
The Giant Steps effort has two goals related to the 2016-17 Spartan Athletic Scholarship Fund: reaching $500,000 in cash raised and 1,000 donors. This would mark increases of 18% in cash raised and 29% in donors from 2015-16.
“As we celebrate our great athletic history this year, we want to take Giant Steps forward with our fundraising efforts,” Athletic Director Kim Record said. “From the State Normal and Industrial College, to the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (WC), to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), we have a history of providing life changing athletic and educational experiences. We must meet these important goals for the Athletic Scholarship Fund so we can continue to provide the same experiences to future generations of Spartans.”
This year also marks the fourth year of the True Spartan Challenge, a student-athlete giving campaign that has seen 100 percent of UNCG student-athletes make a gift back to their team enrichment funds for the past three years.
In the Spring, the Spartan Club will hold two marquee events, including the highly successful Spiro’s Ball, a live and silent auction event that generated more than $50,000 in total revenue last year, and the Spartan Club Golf Classic, which featured a sold-out field in it’s 25th anniversary last year. Spiro’s Ball is set for April 19, 2017 and will be held at Greensboro Country Club, and the Spartan Club Golf Classic is set for April 20, 2017 at Greensboro Country Club’s Farm Course. Both events are sponsored by Northwestern Mutual.
The mission of the Spartan Club is to secure the financial support that will provide our student-athletes with the opportunities to achieve academic and athletic excellence. As a non-profit organization, the Spartan Club supports more than 220 student-athletes who compete in 17 varsity sports at the Division I level.
