Student-Athletes Achieve 100 Percent Participation In True Spartan Challenge 05-09-2016

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG student-athletes have reached many goals on the playing fields and in the classroom this season, but this spring accomplished another feat as 100 percent of all current student-athletes made a gift to their team’s enrichment fund for the third year in a row in the True Spartan Challenge. UNCG is among a small number of schools across the country that have accomplished this, as Spartan student-athletes made a bold statement about their dedication to UNCG Athletics.

“Giving back to the community is a staple at UNCG,” Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president Lucy Mason said. “We are very greatly for the many opportunities that we have been provided thanks to UNCG. We take great pride in giving back to UNCG, and our teams and this year was not different. As demonstrated by our student-athletes’ 100% participation, we want to continue to provide an environment for student-athletes to come and help continue the legacy of gratitude, service and success here at UNCG.”

The True Spartan Challenge student-athlete giving campaign was developed as a partnership between the Spartan Club and the SAAC. Through the True Spartan Challenge, student-athletes also competed to be the first two men’s and two women’s team to 100% participation. This year, men’s golf and men’s soccer accomplished the feat on the men’s side while women’s golf and women’s tennis earned the top two spots on the women’s side.

For their achievements, men’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s golf and women’s tennis will receive $200 in their enrichment funds while all other teams will receive $50 for their enrichment funds. These enrichment fund bonuses are being provided by the Spartan Club.

Gifts made to team enrichment funds are split, with 80% going to the team’s enrichment fund and 20% going to the athletic scholarship fund.  Enrichment funds allow teams to use gifts as enhancements to their operating budget for special one-time needs such as equipment, facility enhancements, out-of-region travel, and other items.

To make a gift to any team enrichment fund or the athletic scholarship fund prior to the end of the Spartan Club’s fiscal year on June 29, 2016, click HERE.
