GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team will host its second exhibition game of the year and its final tune-up before the regular season as the Spartans host Liberty Saturday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium and admission is FREE! The Spartans open the regular season Friday, August 29 as they host Campbell at 8 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in the second game of a women’s/men’s soccer doubleheader.
The Spartans opened competition play earlier this week with a resounding 8-0 victory over crosstown foe Guilford Wednesday night. UNCG scored all eight goals in the final two periods as the teams played three 30-minute sessions. Six different Spartans scored in the victory with freshman Tommi Gardarsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/The Commercial College of Iceland) and sophomore Nicholas Downs (Great Falls, Mont./Charles M. Russell) each scoring a pair of goals to lead the charge.
Gardarsson finished the night with two goals and an assist while fellow newcomer Jacques Francois (Port Au Prince, Haiti/Louisburg College) added a goal and an assist. The Spartans split time in goal between senior Davis Griffin (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) and freshman William Pyle (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell), who combined for the shutout.
UNCG was selected to finish fourth in the preseason Southern Conference poll of league coaches, garnering 16 total points. Furman was picked as the preseason favorite with 22 points while Wofford was second with 21 and East Tennessee State was third with 17 points.
Liberty will be playing its only exhibition game of the year Saturday night before opening the season on Aug. 29 against Bluefield. The Flames were picked to finish fifth in the Big South preseason poll after posting an 11-9 overall record last season and a 5-5 mark in league play. Sachem Wilson leads Liberty into the season as he scored 23 points last year, on the strength of 10 goals and three assists.
