Six UNCG Softball Players Named to NCCSIA All-State Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team was awarded six selections, leading all North Carolina schools, on the 2014 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association University Division All-State Team, the NCCSIA announced Tuesday.
The Spartans received six first-team honorees in senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior), classmate Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park), sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood), classmate Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas), junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood).
Hanks earned NCCSIA first team accolades for the second straight season after earning 16 wins during her senior season at UNCG. Hanks led the team with 45 appearances, 35 games started, 17 complete games and 205 innings pitched. She helped the Spartans make a return trip to the SoCon title game after earning three wins in the postseason season and was named to the SoCon All-Tournament team. Hanks matched a career high with 176 strikeouts and picked up three saves.
Bedwell also earned her second-straight NCCSIA first team selection after an outstanding senior season breaking numerous UNCG records. She became the first UNCG hitter to hit over .400 finishing with a .401 average and drove in a school-record 66 RBI along with a UNCG record .786 slugging percentage. Bedwell was a NFCA first team all-Mideast Region and was the SoCon Player of the Year. Her 17 home runs tied a school record with teammate Lindsay Thomas.
Lindsay Thomas had another stellar season picking up her second-straight NCCSIA first team award after hitting a career-best .388 at the plate. Thomas made NFCA Mideast All-Region second team after starting all 56 games, hitting 13 home runs, 49 RBI and 17 doubles. She made the SoCon All-Tournament team for the second-straight season after breaking the tournament record with five home runs in six games.
Vega was a first-team NCCSIA honoree at third base after setting career highs in average (.325), hits (52), runs (27), home runs (6) and RBI (34). She started all 57 games for UNCG and was second on the team in assists with 108 at third base. Vega had a nine-game hitting streak and hit two home runs against UNC Wilmington along with eight hits in the SoCon Tournament helping the Spartans make the title game for the second-straight season.
Madruga adds another award after an outstanding junior season that earned second team All-SoCon and NCCSIA first team second baseman. Madruga started 51 games setting career highs in average (.338), hits (45), runs scored (42), doubles (9), RBI (17) and stolen bases (10). She had six hits in the SoCon Tournament to help UNCG reach the title game for the second-straight season.
Lastly, Nicole Thomas was awarded NCCSIA first team utility after a breakout sophomore season playing multiple positions for UNCG. Thomas was a NFCA Mideast All-Region third team and a first team All-SoCon starting 52 games at designated player or in the outfield. She hit .352 on 50 hits, 33 runs scored, 13 home runs, 53 RBI and picked up nine wins as a pitcher. Thomas was second on the team with 91.1 innings in the circle and broke the school record with eight RBI against Gardner-Webb.
With six players on the NCCSIA teams, UNCG ran its streak to five-straight years with multiple selections.
Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from North Carolina's NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and Independent institutions for the purpose of promoting college athletics in the state. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina whose responsibilities include sports information.
