Baseball Signee Alex Durham Drafted By New York Mets
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball signee Alex Durham (Burlington, N.C./Southern Alamance) was selected by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the recently completed 2014 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
Durham has indicated that he will sign with the Mets and forgo his commitment to the Spartans.
Ranked as the ninth-best prospect out of North Carolina and the 140th-best pitcher nationally by Perfect Game, Durham was the first high pitcher from the state to hear his name called in this year’s draft. He was tabbed to this year’s Metro 4A all-conference team and led the Patriots to an appearance in the 4A state playoffs.
In his junior season, Durham was a honorable mention All-America selection by Perfect Game. He helped lead the Patriots to a 23-5 overall record, an 11-1 ledger in conference play and a No. 25 state ranking. Durham Joined the Carolina Stars two years ago and continued to play for the showcase team based out of Raleigh. He also earned a spot in the North Carolina State Games and helped pace his squad to a second-place state finish.
UNCG had two additional players drafted in junior RHP Max Povse (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) and senior RHP Dylan Thompson (Snow Camp, N.C./Guilford Technical CC). Povse will begin his professional career as a member of the Danville Braves after his third round selection by the Atlanta Braves while Thompson has joined the Tri City Dust Devils after having been taken in the 31st round by the Colorado Rockies.
