GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman men’s golfer Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) was one of just six golfers to advance through the local U.S. Open Qualifying round at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst Monday. Jenkins secured the coveted spot in the Sectional Qualifying round, competing against a field of 120 professional and amateur golfers. His play Monday served as a final tune-up before the Spartans head to the 2014 NCAA Regionals Thursday-Saturday.

The six qualifiers will advance to sectional qualifying. Sectional qualifying is conducted at two sites internationally on May 26 and 10 sites nationally on June 2.  Sectional qualifiers then advance to the 114th United States Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina on June 12-15, 2014.

Jenkins, the 2014 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, was one of just two amateurs to qualify from the PInewild event. He posted a 4-under par 68, finishing tied for fourth on the round as he posted five birdies, three bogeys and an eagle-2 on the par-4 hole No. 9.

Davidson’s Richard Fountain and professional McCuen Elmore led the round with 6-under par 66 scores. Also qualifying for the Sectional Round was Jake Fields (5-under, 67) and Kamito Hirai (4-under, 68). The final spot came down to a playoff as five different golfers were tied at 3-under 69, including former UNCG standout Andy Bare.

Additionally, junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) posted a 5-over par 77 Monday. The Spartans had four golfers play in the qualifying round in Greensboro last week with sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) carding the top round at 2-under par 70, three shots out of qualifying. Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) was even-par 72, freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) was 1-over par 73 and redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) was 3-over par 75.

Jenkins and the Spartans secured their first-ever team bid into the NCAA Tournament and will head to Auburn, Ala., this week for the NCAA Regionals Thursday-Saturday.
