Chelsea Sumney Turns In Personal-Best At Virginia Challenge
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior runner Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) made a case for a NCAA Regional spot this weekend, posting a personal-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race at the Virginia Challenge. The 2014 NCAA Regionals are held May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla., and there is only one week left to post qualifying times.
Sumney finished ninth overall in the steeplechase event Friday, seventh among collegiate runners in the premier event hosted by Virginia. She clocked in at a time of 10:27.64, trimming over 15 seconds off her previous top time.
Sumney defeated Elon’s Tereza Novotna, the reigning Southern Conference Champion in the event. Her time of 10:27.64 is currently 37th in regional qualifying, with the top 48 times advancing to the NCAA Regional in Jacksonville. Currently, the 48th-best time in the region is 10:32.03.
Chelsea’s sister, Shaina Sumney, currently owns the 16th-best 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the East Region. Shaina posted a time of 10:18.13 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in California, earlier this month.
