GREENSBORO, N.C.UNCG men’s basketball head coach Wes Miller announced the signings of transfer guard Nik Brown (Ashburn, Va./Longwood) and high school forward Marvin Smith Jr. (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) to national letters of intent Friday. Both Smith Jr. and Brown will be eligible to play immediately during the 2014-15 season.

Brown, a 6-3 guard, spent the past season at Brunswick Community College, playing only five games before suffering an injury. He spent the 2012-13 season at NCAA Division I Longwood where he played and started 17 games as a point guard for the Lancers. He averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per game for the Big South member school, including eight games scoring in double figures. He scored a career-high 21 points against Florida A&M (11/23/12), while also scoring 19 points against Cornell (11/24/12) and Coastal Carolina (1/5/13).

“Nik and Marvin are both key additions to our program,” Miller said. “Nik is a physical and experienced guard. We love his toughness on both ends of the floor as well as his ability to create offense for himself and his teammates. He has already played a year of Division I basketball, which should ease his transition from junior college.”

Brown starred interscholastically at Middleburg Academy in Virginia.  He earned Virginia Division II All-State First Team honors as a senior when he averaged 18.6 points, 7.9 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game. He led his team to a 26-5 overall record and a runner-up finish in the Division II State Championship, averaging 22.3 points per game in the tournament to earn All-Tournament honors.

Brown was named to The Washington Post All-Met Third Team as a senior when he led all Virginia high school players in assists. He was ranked the 13th-ranked player overall in the state of Virginia by ESPN. He was named the Liberty District Player of the Year as a junior, averaging 22.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game. He is the son of Sherri P. Brown and was born in Greensboro.

Smith, a 6-6 guard/forward, spent last season at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia leading the team in rebounding during the prep season. Prior to prep school, he spent three years playing at Henrico High School for coach Vance Harmon. He helped the Warriors win the 2013 Virginia AAA State Championship as he averaged 14.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game his senior season. He was named the Capital District First Team and Central Region Second Team, while also earning Virginia Preps Third Team All-State honors.

“Marvin gives us a valuable combination of size, athleticism and versatility on the perimeter,” Miller said. “We have watched him over the last year and have been impressed with his competitiveness, work ethic and winning mentality. We are proud to announce that both Nik and Marvin are Spartans.”

Smith’s 10.3 rebounds per game still stands as the Henrico High School record for rebounding average in a single season. He also participated in the ASSIST All-Star game his senior season. He played AAU Basketball for one of the top teams in the country, Team Loaded VA, helping them to a runner-up finish at the Adidas Invitational. Smith is the some of Marvin Smith Sr. and Lisa Smith.

Brown and Smith join C.J. Coleman (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) and Lloyd Burgess (Asheville, N.C./Christ School) who signed in November during the early signing period in this year’s recruiting class.
