Softball Hosts In-State Foe UNCW Wednesday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team returns home for a doubleheader against in-state rival UNCW Wednesday, April 9 starting at 4 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are 15-21 after dropping three games against Furman over the weekend. UNCG hit four home runs en route to scoring 10 runs in the series finale but lost 12-10. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) hit two home runs and sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) was a triple away from the cycle. Twin sister Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) blasted her team-leading ninth home run.
The Blue and Gold are hitting a solid .296 as a team and sit fifth in the nation in doubles per game at 1.75. Bedwell continues to pace the team with a .420 average on 47 hits, 25 runs scored, 13 doubles, seven home runs and 37 RBI. Nicole Thomas has moved up to second with a .329 average on 27 hits, four doubles, 19 runs scored, nine home runs and a team-best 38 RBI. Lindsay Thomas is third at .310 on 36 hits, 28 runs scored, team-best 15 doubles, three home runs and 21 RBI. Sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) comes in fourth at .308 on 32 hits, 16 runs scored, five doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI.
In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 7-13 with a 4.21 ERA and has a team-high 98 strikeouts, including nine complete games in 118 innings. Nicole Thomas is 4-5 with one complete game throwing 63 innings in 23 appearances. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 4-3 and has thrown 52 innings in 16 appearances with 25 strikeouts.
UNCW enters the doubleheader with a 17-20 record after dropping three games to Hofstra last weekend. Brittany Gamby leads the team with a .304 average on 31 hits, 25 runs scored, three home runs and nine RBI. Nella Chamblee leads the team with 21 runs batted in tied with Casey Shue. In the circle, Casey Rowland is 9-8 with a 2.45 ERA in 131.1 innings. Rowland has nine complete games in 25 appearances with 126 strikeouts.
The Spartans lead the all-time series against the Seahawks with a 34-15-1 record. The teams split two games at the UNCW Beach Bash last month. The Blue and Gold won a 8-5 game before falling 5-2 on the second day of the tournament.
