Baseball Closes Homestand Wednesday Against East Carolina
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fresh off a sweep of Big East foe Georgetown over the weekend, the UNCG closes a seven-game homestand with a midweek contest against East Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live stats and a free live video stream will be available for the contest courtesy of the UNCG athletics department.
The Blue and Gold will go with senior RHP Dylan Thompson (Snow Camp, N.C./Guilford Technical CC) on the mound. He sports a 2.57 earned run average in seven innings pitched (two appearances) and has recorded two walks and four strikeouts. In his first outing of the season, Thompson threw a career-best 5.1 innings against Wake Forest as UNCG recorded an 11-10 walkoff victory in 10 innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Thompson will be opposed by Pirate RHP Tyler Bolton who is 0-1 on the season with a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings pitched. Bolton has tallied six walks and six strikeouts while allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits.
The Spartans tallied 31 runs, 43 hits, seven doubles, three triples, two home runs and 26 RBIs in the trio of games against Georgetown while hitting .394 with a slugging percentage of .569 and an on base percentage of .452. UNCG has posted double-digit hits in its last three outings and five of the last six.
Junior infielder Hunter King (Mason City, Iowa/Northern Iowa Area CC) hit a pair of game-winning home runs last week, including a walk-off bomb against Wake Forest to give the Spartans an 11-10 victory over the Demon Deacons in 10 innings Feb. 25. He also blasted a round-tripper in the bottom of the eighth in the series finale against the Hoyas to lift UNCG to a 10-9 triumph. Senior infielder Sean Guite (Huntington Beach, Calif./Irvine Valley CC) had a monster series over the weekend, batting .800 with eight hits in 10 at bats while adding a double, four runs scored, four RBIS and a slugging percentage of .900.
UNCG is batting .296 as a team, a mark that ranks fourth in the Southern Conference. The Spartans also boast a slugging percentage of .384 and an on base percentage of .374. In terms of extra base hits, the Blue and Gold owns 17 doubles, three triples and three home runs.
The Spartans are led at the dish by junior outfielder Zac MacAneney (Gibsonville, N.C./Virginia Tech) who is batting .412 with 14 hits in 34 at bats. He is also slugging .471 with an on base percentage of .459.
East Carolina is hitting .237 as a team led by Travis Watkins’ .333 average. The Pirates are also slugging .289 while sporting an on base percentage of .322. ECU’s pitching staff owns a 2.53 ERA and has struck out 79 batters against just 30 walks.
Following its contest with East Carolina, UNCG will hit the road for five games beginning this weekend in Myrtle Beach. The Spartans will play UMBC Friday at 10 a.m. in the opening contest of the Chanticleer Classic at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
