GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG indoor track and field team completed competition on day one of the annual Hokie Invitational Friday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Virginia.
On the women’s side, the sister duo of Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) were the Spartans’ top performers posting top five finishes in the 3,000-meter race. Shaina finished fourth in the race in a time of 9:47.37 while Chelsea came in with a time of 9:50.67 to place fifth overall. Sarah Rapp of Virginia Tech won the event with a time of 9:41.94. Additionally, sophomore Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) placed 14th in the 3,000-meter race with a personal-best time of 10:15.22
Sophomore Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) was the Spartans’ other top finisher in day one of the Hokie Invitational. Jensen placed 25th in the 1,000-meter race with a time of 3:09.39.
On the men’s side, sophomore Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) was the top finisher, placing eighth overall in the mile race. Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) turned in an 18th place showing in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:37.92. Rounding out the Spartans’ top 20 finishers was freshman Dakarai Shipp (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) as he finished 18th overall in the 1,000-meter race with a time of 2:37.99.
The Spartans will continue the Hokie Invitational Saturday before hosting the JDL Meet Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem at the JDL Fast Track. That meet will include UNCG, North Carolina Central, Wofford, USC Upstate and N.C. A&T.
