Lucy Mason Named BCBSNC Blue Chip Performer
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) has been named this week’s Blue Chip Performer sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. This is the second year that BCBSNC has sponsored the Blue Chip Performer award, which is chosen weekly from all sports in season and runs throughout the 2013-14 UNCG Athletics season.
Mason scored a season-high 22 points Saturday to lead the Spartans to a 73-62 victory over local Southern Conference rival Elon at Fleming Gymnasium. She added three assists and two steals as UNCG defeated the Phoenix for the first time since Feb. 10, 2011. Mason made seven of 11 attempts from the field and six of nine from the free throw line. She also knocked down two (2) three-point field goals.
Mason is tied for the team lead in scoring average at 12.7 points per game while pacing the squad in steals with 18. She has also earned a team-best 86 free throw attempts and has drained 66 of them. Her 22 points against Elon marked the third time this season Mason has eclipsed the 20-point plateau.
UNCG returns to the court Saturday, Jan. 11, as the Spartans travel to Statesboro, Ga., for a league game against Georgia Southern. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. inside Hanner Fieldhouse.
