Women’s Hoops Looks To Extend Winning Streak Wednesday Against VCU
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s basketball team looks to extend its winning streak to four games Wednesday afternoon, hosting VCU in the second contest of a seven-game homestand. Tipoff from Fleming Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live statistics and a video feed of the contest are available free of charge through www.uncgspartans.com.
The last time the Spartans captured four-straight victories was during a six-game unbeaten stretch from Dec. 11 - Jan. 5 of 2010-11. The Spartans and Rams have played just one time, an 83-69 UNCG victory Feb. 17, 1984 at Fleming Gymnasium. VCU moved to the Atlantic 10 Conference this season after a stint in the Colonial Athletic Association.
UNCG enters the game with a 3-2 record after beating former Southern Conference rival College of Charleston 64-56 Saturday at Fleming Gymnasium. The Blue and Gold held an opponent under 60 points and 30-percent shooting from the field for the first time this season as the Cougars could only muster 56 points and a 29-percent shooting performance.
Senior forward Janae’ Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire), who was just named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career Tuesday, notched her third-straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) led UNCG with a season-high 18 points. Senior guard Breonna Patterson (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) also reached double figures offensively with 10 points. The Spartans out-rebounded College of Charleston 48-42 and forced 24 Cougar turnovers which translated into 24 points. UNCG picked up 22 points in the paint while limiting Charleston to 16 and also took advantage of a 34-9 margin in free throw attempts - knocking down 23 to end up at 68 percent.
Mason is pacing the Spartans in scoring average at 13.0 points per game while Stevenson ranks third in the league in rebounding average at 9.4 boards per contest. She is also averaging a team second-best 12.6 points per game. UNCG averages 65.6 points per game while shooting 34.4 percent from the field and averaging 41.4 rebounds per outing.
VCU has put together an impressive campaign thus far which has the Rams at 4-1 overall - their only loss occurring at Ohio State by an 83-71 margin. In its most recent outing, VCU picked up a road win Sunday at UT-Arlington 74-63 in overtime. Robyn Parks is the team’s leader in scoring average and rebounding average with respective marks of 19.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Isis Thorpe and Jessica Pellechio also check in with double figures offensively at 11.0 and 10.3 points per game. As a team, the Rams are averaging 78.0 points and 44.2 rebounds per contest and are shooting 39.5 percent from the field.
After its matchup with VCU, the Blue and Gold returns to action Sunday, Dec. 1, against Triad rival High Point. The Spartans and Panthers will tip at 2 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium.
