UNCG Places Four on NCCSIA All-State Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team landed four on the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association's University Division All-State team, the organization announced Monday.
Sophomores Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) and Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) highlighted the awards earning first team All-State honors.
Freshmen Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School) and Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda’s Collegiate) also were honored on the second team
White earned her second career All-Conference selection after making the 2012 SoCon All-Freshman team a season ago. White led the team with six goals and one assist for 13 points. The Franklin, Tenn. native played in all 20 games, making 19 starts and scored the game-winning goal in double overtime on the road against Hawai’i. She picked up her first career two-goal game against The Citadel. Four of her six goals were against conference opponents and had a team-high 49 shots.
Simmons had a stellar sophomore season in goal earning first team All-State after starting all 20 games for UNCG. She finished with 1858:07 minutes in goal, good for seventh-best in school history and tied her career high with 97 total saves. The Houston, Texas native set a new career-best in shutouts with nine and played in six overtime games, allowing only three goals in those contests. Simmons also set a new career high with a 0.77 goals against average, which is four-best in school history and finished the season giving up only three goals in her final seven games of the season with four shutouts.
Burrows picked up second team All-Conference accolades as a defender starting 19 games for the Spartans during her rookie campaign. The Auckland, New Zealand native scored two goals against conference foes adding a goal against Western Carolina and The Citadel. Burrows also played center back helping UNCG post 10 shutouts and only allowed three goals in the final six games of the season. Burrows also was selected to the 11-member All-Freshman team.
Brown wraps up the awards for the Spartans making the SoCon All-Freshman team after playing all 20 games at defender and midfielder. The Dunedin, New Zealand native was fourth on the team with three goals and two assists. Brown scored the game-winning goal against East Carolina and added a goal against Francis Marion. In the last six conference games, Brown moved to defense helping UNCG limit opponents to just three goals in the final six games of the season. Brown also held SoCon Player of the Year Nicole Dennion to just one shot in the game against Elon.
