Rain Shortens Men's Tennis Day One at Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team only completed doubles as Day One was suspended due to rain at the Winthrop Invitational Friday afternoon. This is the final fall tournament for the Spartans.
Senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) defeated UAB’s Nick Iannuzzi and Luiz Felipe Pinto, 8-2 in doubles action.
Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and freshman Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) lost to Josh Swindler and Thomas Orestis-Panoulas (UNC Asheville), 8-6.
Singles matches will begin tomorrow with Sarioglu facing Joel Roberts from Presbyterian in the singles main draw. Phillips takes on Andres Alban (NJIT) in the main draw as well. Smith who is coming off a perfect 4-0 mark in last weekend’s tournament will play Appalachian State’s Matt Saltsgaver in the B draw. Murray will face Erik Artursson (NJIT) in the B singles draw. Finally, Wilkins will take on Wofford Graham Duncan in the singles C draw.
