Women's Soccer Set for First-Place Showdown against Furman 10-10-2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team hosts Southern Conference rival Furman in a first-place showdown Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

“We got the number one team in the conference coming to UNCG this weekend,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “Furman is playing at a very high level right now and as a team we get excited for that because it will certainly bring the best out of our team. We expect an exciting match that we need to be sharp to earn a result come Friday night.”

UNCG is currently 7-4-1, 2-0-1 in the SoCon after going 2-0 last weekend against Francis Marion (W, 2-0) and The Citadel (W, 5-3). The Spartans sit at No. 104 in the RPI just behind Samford (No. 82) and Furman (No. 84). The Blue and Gold are 6-1 on the road tied for the most wins in the nation with Austin Peay and James Madison.

Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) scored two goals against the Citadel pushing her season total to five and leads the team with 10 points. Freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate) added a goal against Francis Marion and the Citadel this past weekend. Brown is second on the team with three goals and two assists.

Sophomore Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tennessee/Father Ryan) picked up two assists against the Citadel giving her four points on the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) leads UNCG in net with five shutouts, 58 saves and 0.80 goals against average in 12 games.

Furman enters the contest unbeaten in its last nine games (8-0-1) after taking down Samford, 2-1, at home last Sunday. The Paladins are led by sophomore forward Stephanie DeVita who has nine goals and five assists with five game-winning goals. India Robinson leads the nation in assists with 12 on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Rose Hull has 37 saves, one shutout and a 0.57 goals against average.
